Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield currently operates 23 centers in the Germany and Austria region: 21 in Germany, eight of them in the Group’s own portfolio, and two in Austria. A total of 732 leases were concluded for these 23 centers last year. In addition, the mixed-use project Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, which is being developed by URW in Hamburg’s HafenCity until spring 2024, also experienced a lot of activity in 2022. The pre-letting rate for the retail, dining, and leisure sectors is now 73 percent.

Hammerson has signed Lane7, the boutique bowling concept, at the Bullring Estate, as it continues to deliver its strategy to reinvigorate its assets through new brands, entertainment, and experiential concepts. The 2,601 sq m space on Link Street will be Lane7 Group’s biggest investment to date and serve as its flagship.

The UK’s indoor family activity brand, Oxygen, has appointed Stärka, the leisure real estate advisory business, to support the brand’s expansion throughout the UK. Stärka’s brief is to secure strategically located sites of between 1,858 sq m to 2,787 sq m owned or managed by landlords that are looking to provide a unique experience for their customers and visitors.

As a center launched 20 years ago, Festival Place was originally designed for an era in which ‘big box’ retailers dominated. This is best illustrated by the entries for the MAPIC Awards 2022 category “Best performing Shopping Center”. They include assets such as shopping centers, outlets, and retail parks. They show innovation through new technologies, customer loyalty programs, retail mixes and architectural features which come together for the aim of increasing footfall, customer satisfaction, average spending and offering a unique experience in a new shopping destination. All these outstanding projects demonstrate the strength, innovation, and positivity of our industry.

The prospect of getting a slice of UK retail is not without its risks, regardless of whether the bottom of the market has been hit in terms of shopping center investment. For many first-time buyers in this asset class, the time to focus on getting the basics right has come.

Oxygen will continue to operate RedKangaroo’s sites in Reading, Nottingham and Coventry, UK under the RK brand with the view to integrating them into the Oxygen brand in the months ahead.
