To combine the practical with the useful is a great thing and, because Copenhagen is also quite beautiful to look at in late spring, my participation in the ICSC European Marketing Conference in early June was a great experience. I enjoy the eager discussions with marketing experts from all over the world. Exchanging views and sharing is, after all, an important part of my daily work. Not infrequently, new and exciting friendships sprout on such occasions.

In a field study with Gerry Weber, Zumtobel was able to confirm the influence of lighting in shops. The optimized lighting concept led to a 10% increase in sales. This practice test, in which the lighting preferences of seven different customer groups were analyzed using a neuropsychological target group model, was a continuation of an earlier laboratory experiment.

The world of Mobile Location Analytics (MLA), and location-based services is one of today’s fastest-growing technology sectors – and its application in property is the highest growth area of all. With a compound annual growth rate forecast at 28% for 2015 to 2019 and an estimated market size of $43.3 billion in 2019, it’s one that clearly needs to be taken seriously by all owners. Why does it exist at all?

A successful mix of shop design, colors, materials, lighting, and visual merchandising. That’s what it took again this year to win a EuroShop RetailDesign Award.

The Minto shopping center in Mönchengladbach is already a success story. Its presentation as the “Home of Indulgence” counts: Just one month after opening, mfi/Unibail-Rodamco recorded one million visitors.

Sometimes it feels a bit strange, even now, after 25 years in foodservice consulting, to be talking about the property market. I am not sure why, because when I set up Coverpoint, it was to help companies who did not DO food, but who NEEDED it as part of their guest offer. Airports, railway stations, shopping centers, museums, galleries, and historic palaces – we have worked in them all.

Sadolin/Albæk takes a close look at the metropolis on the Øresund and its surroundings in “Copenhagen – Property Market Report 2014.” It examines the retail segment, too.

Legislation forcing all retail shops to close on Sundays entered into force in Hungary on March 15, 2015; most shops are forced to close on Sundays and at night.

The Savills’ “UK Shopping Center and High Street Bulletin, Q4/2014” notes intense activity in the country’s market with increased investor activities and demand for the sector. This trend is expected to continue into the medium term.

A new breed of outlet shopping malls is emerging. Outlets that no longer sit on the periphery of city life but exist at the heart of an urban development complementing retail parks, shopping centers, and high streets alike. For example the London Designer Outlet.

According to Barbara Topolska, COO of Neinver, the company does not just build open-air centers. Instead, it develops “villages” that draw upon the tradition, history, and architecture of the place in which they are built.

It was the usual framework: Sunshine; the laid-back the historic old town; the vibrant, busy life of southern France in the midst of November; the dark-suited businessmen meeting in the Palais de Festival or in the many restaurants and bars of Cannes. It was the 20th MAPIC, the retail real estate fair, in November 2014.

Nicholas Moses, Managing Director of CityFit, says that shopping centers and retail parks will play a central role as locations in this expansion. He opened the first fitness studio in Plaza Rzeszow in May.

Shopping malls – in the form of bazaars or antique market halls – have been around for almost 2,000 years. It took until 1956, however, for the first “modern” integrated shopping mall (under one roof) to be opened – the Southdale Center in Minneapolis (USA).

At the start of each year, the members of the Coverpoint Team, part of the JLL Group, put their heads together and spend time identifying and classifying the most important foodservice trends for the next five years.

First of all, I would like to take the opportunity to mark the occasion of Coverpoint’s purchase by JLL in November 2014. For the first time in 21 years, I will have a “boss” and while it is still very fresh, the whole team is having fun and looking forward to the future.
