Retail parks and hybrids have weathered the storm of the crisis relatively well due to their high proportion of local supply. Nevertheless, in the vortex of the coronavirus crisis, the issue of sustainability seems to have fallen by the wayside in many cases. That picture, however, is deceptive. The necessary (re)alignment of retail parks and other agglomerated retail real estate properties makes it necessary for ESG criteria (environment, social, governance) to be taken into account. The following “Top 5 Lessons Learned” were taken from a recent publication on retail parks in Germany*.

The footfall and revenue figures show that customers have not given up on visiting shopping centres in the long-term perspective or changed their shopping habits dramatically. Following the reopening after the first wave of the corona crisis, both performance indicators grew again, and revenue even exceeded last year’s figures in a year-on-year comparison. The impact on footfall and turnover was lower in the second wave, with footfall slightly growing in recent weeks. Considering that Christmas is coming, we can expect customers to return to shopping centres quickly as soon as they are allowed to, resulting in an exceptional increase in footfall and revenue.

Work has begun on site on a major 180-acre mixed-use development set in a prime location in Gloucestershire. Led by renowned Cheltenham-based property developer Robert Hitchins, the development will feature a designer outlet and lifestyle retail destination, a flagship garden centre, much-needed homes and a range of local amenities.
