Westfield Centro further strengthens its entertainment profile: CineStar comprehensively modernizes its cinema complex

Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW) and CineStar are sending a strong signal at Westfield Centro and setting new standards for the cinema experience in Germany. Alongside the extension of the partnership, extensive modernization work will be carried out on the cinema complex.

In addition to architectural elements such as a new highlight façade and a new marketplace concept, the entire cinema will be completely refurbished. CineStar is also planning to install an IMAX cinema in auditorium 5, making it its fifth IMAX cinema in Germany. The investment costs for the project are 16 million euros. The renovation work will begin in the third quarter of 2025 and is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2026.

With the renovation work at the Oberhausen location, CineStar is continuing its strong investment and modernization course and creating a completely new cinema experience in the building. All seats and interior elements, all screens and the entire sound and projection technology are to be replaced in all nine theatres.

All film halls will have laser projection in future. In addition to the regular auditoriums and the IMAX cinema, there will also be two boutique auditoriums with approximately 30-35 seats, with a design based on a specific theme. The color concept throughout the building will be revised and the common areas will be given an attractive lounge design. The Food&Beverage area will also be given a new concept. The counters will give way to an ultra-modern marketplace where guests can serve themselves.

Paul Douay, Managing Director, Asset Management, Central Europe at URW, says: “We are delighted to continue our successful partnership with the CineStar Group. With the architectural upgrade and the establishment of an IMAX auditorium, CineStar Oberhausen, one of the flagships of the CineStar Group, is opening a new chapter in the success story of the entertainment and leisure destination Westfield Centro. The comprehensively modernized CineStar will be a blockbuster in the truest sense of the word. Visitors to Westfield Centro can already look forward to a unique experience.”

Michael Strohmenger, Managing Director of CineStar, says: “We are very pleased to be starting the successful further development of our cinema in Oberhausen together with URW and to be setting a new standard for cinema entertainment in the region with the planned refurbishment measures. The redesign of the CineStar Oberhausen is part of our long-term investment and modernization strategy aiming to bring our cinemas up to a contemporary and even more attractive standard, thereby ensuring their future viability. I would like to thank URW for the successful conversations and the partnership-based cooperation and am convinced that we will realize the project together very quickly and according to plan.”

Oliver Fock, Managing Director of CineStar, adds: “CineStar Oberhausen is one of our most important cinemas due to its connection to Westfield Centro and its large catchment area. We are all the more pleased that we are now taking the cinema to a new level both visually and technically. With the planned work, the cinema will be transformed in a unique manner and will offer a premium experience in all auditoriums and foyer areas.
