Werre-Park Bad Oeynhausen Installs Germany’s Largest Shopping Center Rooftop Solar Array

Werre-Park in Bad Oeynhausen, North Rhine-Westphalia, is taking a major step toward sustainability with the installation of Germany’s largest photovoltaic (PV) system on a shopping center roof. Once completed, the solar array will have a total capacity of over 3,800 kWp and generate approximately 3.8 million kWh of green electricity annually.

The installation will feature 8,384 modules across a 33,000 m² roof, with commissioning scheduled for October 2026. Around 660,000 kWh of the center’s annual electricity demand will be supplied directly by the system, while the remaining 3 million kWh will feed into the public grid. The project is expected to reduce Werre-Park’s CO₂ emissions by approximately 1,670 tons per year, demonstrating a strong commitment to climate protection and energy efficiency.

The project is being led by Boening Glatzel Klug GmbH (BGK) as consultant for the ownership group. Faber Solartechnik is responsible for project development and installation, while LichtBlick manages financing and operation of the PV system. The shopping center itself is operated and leased by ECE.

“We are proud to set a milestone for sustainable retail real estate in Germany with this project,” says Matthias Böning, Managing Partner at BGK. “The largest rooftop PV system on a shopping center is a clear statement of our responsibility toward the environment and society.”

“Werre-Park demonstrates to visitors how a modern shopping experience can be combined with effective climate protection measures,” adds Paul Schloz, Managing Partner at asuco Fonds GmbH, representing the ownership group. “We are excited to realize this project with such ambitious partners while supporting the energy transition locally.”

“Being able to build Germany’s largest shopping center PV system less than 20 kilometers from our headquarters is a wonderful challenge,” comments Jonas Kothy, authorized officer at Faber Solartechnik.

“Commercial rooftops offer significant potential for solar energy expansion in Germany. Together with our commercial clients, we are working to identify suitable rooftops for PV installations and contribute measurably to the energy transition. Werre-Park is a prime example of how commercial spaces can be efficiently used for sustainable energy production,” says Marcus Schewe, Business Development Manager Rooftop PV at LichtBlick.
