Sustainability Becomes Measurable: Why MK Illumination’s First Audited VSME Report Is Also Relevant for Shopping Centers

For operators of shopping centers and commercial real estate, the focus of sustainability is increasingly extending beyond the individual site. Partners and suppliers along the value chain are moving further into focus – particularly with regard to ESG reporting, investor requirements, and the verifiability of sustainability performance.

Against this backdrop, MK Illumination has, as the first company in its industry, prepared a sustainability report in accordance with the VSME Comprehensive Standard and additionally had it externally audited. The report is part of the company’s long-term strategy “SUSTAINABLE HAPPINESS 2030” and systematically summarizes its ESG performance.

The report is based on a double materiality assessment, which considers both the company’s impacts on the environment and society as well as the related risks and opportunities. It covers, among other topics, climate protection, biodiversity— with a particular focus on avoiding light pollution —the circular economy, as well as social responsibility and responsible corporate governance throughout the value chain.

In addition to its focus on responsible supply chain management, employees are a central pillar of the company’s sustainability strategy. Key priorities include workplace safety, mental health and well-being, fair compensation, and equal opportunities for all employees. A particular strength is the representation of women in operational management at headquarters, where women hold six of the twelve management positions, reflecting the company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

For shopping centers and retail real estate, the traceability of ESG data along the supply chain is becoming an increasingly relevant factor in reporting and procurement. ESG criteria are being increasingly integrated into purchasing decisions, while transparency from suppliers is gaining importance for owners, investors, and financing partners. Verifiable sustainability data can help support reporting obligations and better assess risks within the supply chain.

“The considerable effort involved in preparing this report has truly paid off. The process has generated valuable insights and new ideas that are now being put into practice. Most importantly, the report confirms that we are on the right track and making strong progress, while also helping us focus on the areas where we can create even greater impact. This not only strengthens our sustainability efforts but also delivers tangible benefits for our customers,” says Thomas Mark, President of MK Illumination.

In the area of seasonal installations, aspects such as energy efficiency, durability, and circular economy principles are gaining increasing importance. At the same time, social criteria such as working conditions in the supply chain, safety during implementation, and responsible production and procurement processes are being given greater consideration.

For shopping centers and retail destinations, this means that sustainability is becoming an increasingly important criteria in the selection of partners – not only in day-to-day operations but also for temporary lighting concepts.
