Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW) has reported 10 million visits to Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier since its opening in April 2025 — a milestone, reached after ten months of operation.
The mixed-use quarter in Hamburg’s HafenCity was developed on a former industrial port site and combines retail, gastronomy, entertainment, residential units, offices and cruise infrastructure. Prior to opening, URW projected annual footfall of 16.2 million visitors — a target that now appears increasingly realistic.
A €2.45 Billion Urban Investment
With total investment of approximately €2.446 billion, Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier ranks among the largest private urban regeneration projects in Germany. The 419,000 sqm scheme comprises 14 buildings and serves a catchment area of around 3.5 million people.
The development includes:
- 130 shops
- More than 40 restaurants and cafés
- 10-screen Kinopolis cinema with nearly 2,200 seats
- Three Accor hotels
- 579 apartments
- A cruise terminal with two berths for ships carrying up to 1,800 passengers
- 80,500 sqm of retail space
Cultural and leisure components such as the immersive art centre Port des Lumières complement the retail and F&B offer, while anchor tenants include Breuninger and Thalia. The quarter received a BREEAM Communities “Excellent” certification, positioning it among Germany’s most sustainability-focused large-scale urban developments.
A New Urban Magnet on the Elbe
Despite repeated delays, technical challenges and rising construction costs which pushed total investment well above earlier projections, the 10-million-visit milestone underscores the destination’s operational momentum.
As visitor numbers continue to grow, Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier is consolidating its role as a new urban node on the Elbe and a key component of HafenCity’s southern expansion.
