Germany’s Rhine-Ruhr Zentrum Starts A New Chapter As The Center’s Refurbishment Commences

The Rhein-Ruhr Zentrum (RRZ) in Mülheim, Germany, has entered a new era with the start of the conversion work. A total of around 180 million euros is to be invested in the comprehensive redesign of the center. After an intensive planning phase, the first conversion work has now begun.

“The Rhein-Ruhr Zentrum is a central component of the city and its retail landscape – its redevelopment is a strong signal for the future of retail in our region,” said Mülheim’s Mayor Marc Buchholz during his recent visit to the RRZ. “As a city, we are very interested in working hand in hand with committed investors such as the Eurofund Group and Signal Capital Partners – because good and sustainable solutions can only be developed in close cooperation.”

The first structural changes have been visible for around two weeks: in the West Mall (area E1), a 60-meter-long dust protection wall has been installed along the inner façade between McFit and the former Telekom store. This serves to prepare the future space for the new anchor tenants Kaufland and Müller.

From the second half of 2026, Kaufland will offer a comprehensive range of fresh produce and full-range products on around 7,300 sq m in the western part of the center. Also from autumn 2026, the drugstore Müller will occupy 2,600 sq m with a wide range of products offered from the care, household, toys and multimedia sectors, making it the future local supply focus on the E1 level in the RRZ. Both tenants will be key drivers of footfall in the new “Convenience Hub”, the future striking western entrance area of the center.

Customers will see the first building block of the new RRZ in the coming months: The first new tenant, entertainment provider Adventica, will open its doors in summer 2025 in the former discotheque space next to Cinemaxx on almost 3,000 sq m.
