Designer Outlet Parndorf achieves BREEAM In-Use Certification with “Excellent” Rating

This places the outlet center not only among the most sustainable shopping destinations in Europe but also among the top 20% of all BREEAM In-Use-certified buildings worldwide.

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is one of the world’s leading sustainability assessment systems, evaluating criteria such as energy efficiency, water consumption, waste management, and the health and wellbeing of building users.

Consistent Measures for greater Sustainability

Designer Outlet Parndorf has relied on efficient and resource-saving solutions for many years. Its entire electricity demand is covered 100% by renewable energy sources. Since introducing its environmental management system in 2010, electricity consumption in common areas has been reduced by more than 30% and gas consumption by 100% — despite increasing visitor numbers and centre expansions. Since May 2024, heating in the common areas has been provided exclusively by heat pumps, complemented by comprehensive LED lighting. Since 2024, shops have also been gradually converted from gas heating systems to heat pumps.

With 100 EV charging stations — making it, in cooperation with Burgenland Energie, one of Austria’s largest EV charging hubs — and a photovoltaic system installed in 2024 on 1,650 sq m of roof space, the centre is further contributing to climate-friendly mobility and energy self-sufficiency. Smart metering, a zero-landfill waste concept, and the use of biodegradable cleaning agents complete the sustainability strategy.

“This award confirms our consistent approach of firmly embedding sustainability into our corporate strategy. Our goal is to combine an attractive shopping experience with responsible use of resources — for our visitors, our tenants, and not least for the environment. I am particularly proud of the entire team whose strong commitment and innovative ideas have made this success possible. For us, the BREEAM certification is both recognition and motivation to continue on this path.”

A strong Signal for the Future

The award for Designer Outlet Parndorf is part of a broader international success: four McArthurGlen centres — Parndorf, Castel Romano, Roermond, and Serravalle — received the sought-after “Excellent” certification. This underlines McArthurGlen’s leading role in sustainable retail and marks an important milestone within the company’s own sustainability programme, Evolve.

The BREEAM award represents a key step in McArthurGlen’s long-term vision to take a leading role in sustainable retail destinations. Further centres are already in the certification process — a clear commitment to firmly anchoring sustainability across all areas of the business.
