Cornerstone Ceremony for “Quartier Wandsbek Markt” in Hamburg

Union Investment, together with the City of Hamburg’s Senator for Finance and the Wandsbek District, as well as representatives from politics and the district, celebrated the laying of the cornerstone for the Hamburg transformation project “Quartier Wandsbek Markt.”

The Wandsbek District Assembly has now approved the zoning plan. This allows the transformation project to move into its next crucial phase: the construction of new buildings on the site of the demolished old Karstadt parking garage, as well as the planned building extensions. A total of 126 apartments, along with office and retail space, will be created.

Senator for Finance and Districts, Dr. Andreas Dressel: “Today, there is rightly a spirit of optimism in the Wandsbek Markt neighborhood: The laying of the cornerstone marks the start of an exciting transformation project involving new construction, renovation, and the addition of new floors. The project will shape the neighborhood and visibly bring something new to the district. And behind the façade, in the property’s office spaces, parts of the Wandsbek District Office will find a new home. Departments that were previously spread across various administrative buildings will be centralized there in the future. Our employees can look forward to a customer-oriented, modern, and future-proof administrative building that meets the requirements of contemporary spatial concepts, modern work environments, and urban efficiency standards.”

“We are very pleased that we are now taking the next major step in our transformation project and, in particular, that we can begin construction of the 126 apartments in the near future. The demolition of the old Karstadt parking garage and the removal of the rear facades from the 1960s have already been completed. The renovation of the historic facade facing Wandsbeker Markt is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026.” – Leon Wirges Project Manager, Union Investment

The “Quartier Wandsbek Markt” is currently one of the largest privately financed transformation projects in Hamburg. It is part of the portfolio of the open-ended real estate fund UniImmo: Deutschland, managed by Union Investment. With this project, the Hamburg-based real estate company—owner of the former Karstadt property as well as the neighboring QUARREE Wandsbek—is creating a vibrant mix of residential units, retail spaces, parts of the Wandsbek district office, offices, and a dining hall at Wandsbeker Markt. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2028.
