Amazon announces major job cuts: 16,000 employees impacted

The global online retailer has decided on a massive organizational reduction, which impacts around 16,000 roles within the company.

In a statement posted on Amazon News – shared in an email with Amazon employees beforehand, Beth Galetti announced the massive reduction as part of the company’s efforts “to strengthen our organization by reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy.”

The major cut has been predicted earlier this month, as cited by Reuters. This layoff wave affects approximately 16,000 roles, which equals to almost 10% of Amazon’s corporate workforce.

To support those impacted in the layoff, Galetti claims Amazon will offer “most US-based employees 90 days to look for a new role internally (timing will vary internationally based on local and country level requirements). Then, for teammates who are unable to find a new role at Amazon or who choose not to look for one, we’ll provide transition support including severance pay, outplacement services, health insurance benefits (as applicable), and more.”

The American multinational company assures employees that such reductions are not planned to be regular, however, teams are going continue the evaluation of “ownership, speed, and capacity to invent for customers, and make adjustments as appropriate,” – says Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology at Amazon.
