Under Otto’s leadership, ECE has grown from a national developer into one of Europe’s leading shopping center operator, managing around 200 properties for a range of investors with a combined rental area of roughly seven million square meters. His forward-looking approach – balancing innovation, resilience, and steady international growth – has helped redefine how shopping destinations adapt to changing consumer behavior and urban environments.
The MAPIC jury highlighted Alexander Otto’s ability to combine long-term strategic thinking with the values of a family-owned enterprise, noting his emphasis on sustainability and trust-based partnerships with investors and retailers. His leadership style, they said, has set new benchmarks for collaboration and responsible growth in the retail property sector.

Beyond his business achievements, Otto’s philanthropic work also played a key role in the recognition. Through three charitable foundations, he has championed the revitalization of city centers, including the transformation of Hamburg’s iconic Jungfernstieg promenade, while also supporting initiatives in sports, medicine, science, and the arts.
“This award is a great honor,” Otto said at the ceremony. “It reflects what we’ve accomplished together at ECE and within the wider shopping center industry. More importantly, it inspires us to keep shaping the future of retail places with creativity, sustainability, and strong partnerships.”
Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, MAPIC remains one of the most influential gatherings for professionals in retail and real estate. The event’s Lifetime Awards highlight individuals whose vision and leadership have left a lasting mark on how people shop, live, and connect in urban spaces
