Thalia opens new flagship store at Neumarkt Galerie

The important anchor tenant of the popular hybrid center at Cologne’s Neumarkt has extended its lease and is investing in a comprehensive modernisation and redesign of its sales premises. After the remodelling, the “Mayersche bookstore” will operate under the new Thalia brand name.

During the course of the year, the popular bookstore will extensively modernize its sales area in the center of around 4,000 sq m on three levels – and reopen with an adapted concept under the new Thalia brand name. Thalia Bücher GmbH and Deka are jointly investing €6 million in the refurbishment. After the reopening, customers will then be able to browse and shop at a bookseller of the latest generation.

Angela De Jager, Center Manager of Neumarkt Galerie, states: “The fact that we can now continue this great partnership is a clear sign for us that Neumarkt Galerie is seen as an attractive, profitable, and image-enhancing location. We are delighted that we can continue to offer our customers the extensive range of products from the Mayerschen bookstore – in the future Thalia. It is the largest bookstore in Cologne’s city center.”

Dominik Seyferth, Head of Store Network Development at Thalia, comments: “The spacious sales area on three levels, directly at Cologne’s traffic hub, Neumarkt, is perfect. If we want to have a presence, this is the best place in Cologne – and one of the busiest hubs in Germany. Here, we are also highly visible as a brand to the outside world, if only because of the striking building with its iconic ‘Dropped Cone’ on the roof.”

Mayersche Buchhandlung has been a tenant in the center for more than 20 years and now has concluded a long-term contract extension with Deka Immobilien Investment GmbH. APLEONA Real Estate GmbH acted as an intermediary. Neumarkt Galerie is part of the portfolio of the open-ended real estate fund Deka-ImmobilienEuropa.
