Union Investment lets 9,600 sq m of space in Freiburg’s Breisgau Center to Kaufland

Property held in a special real estate fund.

The Breisgau Center in Freiburg has a new anchor tenant. Union Investment has signed a lease with Kaufland for 9,600 sq m of space. The food retailer will take over space previously occupied by real hypermarket. The lease begins on 7 August 2021.

“In terms of floorspace, this transaction is one of our biggest new lettings in the retail sector in the last two years. Well-located, grocery-anchored retail has proved to be extremely resilient during the pandemic,” said Wolfgang Kessler, a member of the management team at Union Investment Institutional Property GmbH.

“As the new anchor tenant in Freiburg’s Breisgau Center, we can now offer our customers in the region another attractive store,” said Dorothee Caliebe, head of acquisitions and portfolio management at Kaufland. “We are pleased to be working with such a strong partner as Union Investment in this popular shopping destination.”

Built in 1975, the Breisgau Center has been part of Union Investment’s special real estate fund since 2011 and offers 16,687 sq m of usable space. It is located in south-west Freiburg and has excellent transport links, being situated adjacent to the B3 highway in the Haid commercial zone.

The shopping centre features a broad mix of tenants and offers a wide range of stores and services. The businesses occupying the 20 retail units include a dry cleaners, fashion and shoe shops, eateries and a branch of Sixt car hire. The Breisgau Center also provides around 950 free parking spaces for customers in an outdoor car park.
