STRABAG kicks off Prague’s largest construction project

The European-based construction group STRABAG has been awarded the contract for the first phase of construction of the largest building project in the history of Prague.

As consortium leader (52 %), STRABAG, together with the Czech companies Aspira Construction (32 %) and Instalace Praha (16 %), will realise on 250.000 m² around 400 flats, 8,000 m² of office space and 6,300 m² of retail space in the Smíchov City urban development area. An impressive pedestrian boulevard 1 km long and 28 m wide will run through the new development. The contract has a value of around CZK 2.31 billion (approx. € 85 million). Work is scheduled for completion by 2024.

“The Smíchov City project will completely change the appearance of this up-and-coming district of Prague while offering new high-quality residential accommodation. The varied mix of flats, offices and extensive leisure areas will create a modern and liveable city district with a lasting contribution to the quality of life in the Czech capital,” says Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE.

New use of brownfield railway site
The Smíchov City urban development project covers an area of 400,000 m² on the brownfield site of a former freight rail depot. Over the next twelve years, the construction will result in housing for 3,300 people, offices for 9,000 workers, a school and two new parks. Public areas and green spaces account for 60 % of the development. The entire district is very well connected to the public transport, with everything designed to be within easy walking distance.
