As temperatures rise, so does the opportunity for shopping center operators to reposition themselves as social hubs rather than pure retail destinations. Creating a location where people can meet and socialize in a climate-controlled space also holds strong appeal for consumers, especially in light of the recent heatwaves across Europe.
In any case, many operators and landlords are already leaning into enhancing dwell-time and consumer-loyalty through turning their asset into genuine social hubs with special summer events. Among these is Sonae Sierra with a rollout of various indoor and open-air music experiences across their European center portfolio.

Gera, Germany
At GeraArcaden in Germany, the center converted its entire space into what has become the largest indoor party in the region. The ArcadenTanzt! (“Arcaden dances!”) event drew around 2,500 visitors, demonstrating how a shopping center’s existing footprint e.g. malls, atriums, common areas, can be repurposed into large-scale event infrastructure without requiring a standalone venue.
Lisbon, Portugal
In Lisbon, Centro Vasco da Gama has brought back its Sunset Sessions for another season, adding live music across two terraces, each with its own distinct atmosphere. The format indicates a broader trend: centers with outdoor or semi-outdoor space are treating those areas as programmable assets in their own right, rather than secondary to the retail offer.

Berlin, Germany
At ALEXA in Berlin, a two-day Silent Disco gave visitors free access to a music experience paired with online and offline contests. The format combines low-cost, low-friction entertainment with built-in social sharing potential.
Be it a silent disco in Berlin or sunset concerts on a Lisbon terrace, the message from Sonae Sierra’s summer program is simple: shopping centers don’t need four walls and a sale to bring people through the door. Sometimes all it takes is good music and a reason to show up.
