Chapman Taylor designing the redevelopment of the Rathaus Galerie in Essen, Germany

Chapman Taylor has been appointed by HBB Hanseatische Betreuungs- und Beteiligungsgesellschaft to design the redevelopment of the Rathaus Galerie in the German city of Essen.

In close collaboration with the client and ESP Design Studios of Hanover, we developed a storybook which strongly relates to the characteristics of the Ruhr Valley region, informing our interior design concept for the shopping centre.

The new mall’s look and feel makes reference to the region’s cultural and geographic context, incorporating severalgreen, cosy lounge areas and F&B islands. Two glass-covered atriums with two-storey shop façades act as central meeting points, providing the ideal environment for socialising and relaxing.

The centre’s new F&B area hosts individually designed outlets and seating areas, combining the nostalgic charm of the Ruhr Valley’s old Trinkhallen (non-alcoholic drink kiosks which once served the area‘s industrial and mining workers) with the design of modern street cafés – a down-to-earth ambience meeting high comfort.
