Action Continues Rapid Expansion Across Europe

Dutch non-food discounter Action continued its strong European growth trajectory in the first quarter of 2026, reporting a 14% increase in net sales to €4 billion and further accelerating its international expansion.

The retailer also recorded like-for-like sales growth of 3.6%, while average weekly customer visits increased by 12.4% year-on-year to 22.2 million shoppers.

“In uncertain times, consumers are more careful with their spending,” said Hajir Hajji, CEO of Action. “At the same time, more and more customers continue to turn to Action for good-quality daily necessities at the lowest price.”

The company added 33 stores during the first quarter, bringing its total network to 3,335 locations across 15 European countries. Action remains on track to open at least 400 new stores in 2026.

A major milestone during the quarter was the retailer’s market entry into Croatia, where the first store opening in Sesvete near Zagreb reportedly generated the second-highest first-day sales performance in the company’s history. Action also confirmed plans to enter Slovenia later this year, with its first store expected to open in Velenje.

France remains the company’s largest market, with more than 900 stores. During the quarter, Action was named “Favourite Retail Brand of the French” for the fourth consecutive year.

The company also continued to invest heavily in logistics infrastructure. In Italy, Action opened a new distribution centre in Ferentino, certified with the highest BREEAM sustainability rating (“Outstanding”).

With consumer spending under pressure across Europe, Action’s continued expansion highlights the ongoing strength of value-oriented retail formats and the growing importance of discount operators within the European retail landscape.
