A commercial district that combines several uses is being built in the middle of the German city of Bochum. HBB explains the challenges and restructuring of department stores, using this mixed-use development as an example.

Today the real estate fair Mipim started in Cannes. It will take place until March 17th. Organizer RX expects 23,000 participants from over 90 countries this year, which would be 15% more visitors than in 2022.

How would one summarize the last 15 years in retail real estate? Gregory Fonseca, Director of Architecture BDP, expresses it in one word: disruptive. He takes us on an instructive journey through 15 years of retail and retail architecture.

Developers have increasingly turned their attention to mixed-use retail developments for their new construction projects and the redevelopment of urban areas. In the post-pandemic era, consumers are looking for diverse work, leisure, and shopping places. Mixed-use, therefore, is not a trend – it is the future of real estate. The following projects are the finalists in the mixed-use category of the MIPIM Awards.

Another food & beverage offering has been added to the Westfield Centro promenade: the BigChefs restaurant brand opens its second branch in Germany and becomes one of the new flagships of the food & beverage brand mix at the location. With the new addition, Westfield Centro has achieved full occupancy for the promenade located directly at the center with around 15 dining concepts.

Hammerson has signed Lane7, the boutique bowling concept, at the Bullring Estate, as it continues to deliver its strategy to reinvigorate its assets through new brands, entertainment, and experiential concepts. The 2,601 sq m space on Link Street will be Lane7 Group’s biggest investment to date and serve as its flagship.

Due to the increasing scarcity of the land and housing market, integrated locations for local supply real estate are increasingly becoming the focus of urban development. When modernizing or building new supermarkets or discount stores, there is a growing demand for “mixed-use properties”, in which local suppliers are combined with commerce, offices and apartments.

Despite all challenges, a lot is happening in the retail real estate industry and great projects are in the making. This is best illustrated by the entries for the MAPIC Awards 2022 category “Best performing Shopping Center”. They include assets such as shopping centers, outlets, and retail parks. They show innovation through new technologies, customer loyalty programs, retail mixes and architectural features which come together for the aim of increasing footfall, customer satisfaction, average spending and offering a unique experience in a new shopping destination. All these outstanding projects demonstrate the strength, innovation, and positivity of our industry.

Altera Vastgoed has acquired off-market local shopping center Het Stroink in Enschede (NL) from WP Retail Invest CV (“WPRI”). The center has recently been renovated by WPRI to create a retail complex with a pharmacy, a medical center, three primary schools, a nursery and a petrol station.
