Last year, the 30th occurrence of Mipim, the international market for real estate professionals, took place. As always, the event was held in Cannes, France. The 2019 edition gathered 26,800 players from all sectors of the international property industry and included more than 5,400 investors and 560 political leaders from more than 100 countries. This year, Mipim is scheduled to take place from March 10 to 13. “The Future is Human” will be the main theme. By 2050, there will be 9.7 billion people in the world, of whom 70% will live in urban areas, according to the United Nations. Cities are poles of business activity, employment, education, and innovation; their roles are crucial with regard to promoting growth that is sustainable, economic, and socially inclusive, as well as to surmounting environmental and social challenges.
The commitment of all users of cities – reflecting the full range of society – is important in the building of a common purpose: to implement sustainable goals and to move towards an inclusive future. Local authorities, national and regional governments, and the private sector are essential components in the designing of our cities. However, people – humans – need to be at the heart of every strategy. How cities respond to their citizens’ changing needs and the way people relate to each other is central to this. Real estate stakeholders are increasingly incorporating the social dimension into their projects. The purpose of this is to strengthen social interaction, build communities as well as a sense of belonging, and support an improved quality of urban living.
